Many Christians today are still waiting for the second coming of Christ – in anticipation of a glorious and physically perceptible arrival.
In the first century, almost all of Christendom was sure of the coming of the Kingdom of God before the end of the century, but great was their disappointment when the Kingdom of God was not revealed.
The Apocalypse states that the Kingdom of Heaven will be proclaimed, and there will be a new heaven and a new Earth.
The second coming of Jesus, the proclamation of the Kingdom of God – all this must be intuited spiritually and not analyzed intellectually.
Jesus told his first-century countrymen, “There are some among you who will not see death until they see the Kingdom of God in its glory.” Hence, concluding that the Kingdom of God would manifest before the end of the century – and they felt disappointed when nothing happened.
Did nothing happen?
A stupendous event happened on the morning of Pentecost when 120 people were initiated into the Kingdom of God by the charismatic Christ.
The second coming of Jesus will probably not be an externally visible historical event but the manifestation of the internal Christ in the consciousness and experience of many people.
For thousands of years humanity, even Christians have lived at the mercy of its human ego. But, according to the Cosmic Laws, great guilt generates great suffering. In this 21st century of the Christian Era, the collective evil of mankind has reached an unprecedented climax. Seers, ancient and modern – not excepting Jesus himself – prophesied unheard-of tragedies for the coming decades. The Antichrist of collective evil will try to destroy the work of Christ, and the bulk of humanity will succumb to his strategy.
But the more the negative pole of evil intensifies, the more the positive pole of good deeds also intensifies. When the two poles of human nature - its Christlike side and the satanic one - reach the apogee of their intensity, in good and evil, there will be a glorious manifestation of the Kingdom of Christ on Earth. That is an internal outbreak of Christ, on a large scale Pentecost, not of 120 people, but of millions. And this internal outbreak will also affect, indirectly, the external experience. Christ will come from the clouds of heaven, with great power and majesty, as he already came in the year 33, on the clouds of the ignorance of his disciples.
The phenomena described in the sacred text must be understood spiritually and symbolically.
A second material coming of Christ, completing the first material coming of Jesus, would in no way change the situation of humanity, as it has not changed until now.
Annually, Western Christendom celebrates the birth of Jesus as a social and commercial feast, or even with a spiritual liturgy – but none of this has improved humanity. The great medieval mystic Meister Eckhart wrote: “A thousand times that Jesus is born in the cave of Bethlehem, if Christ is not born in your soul, you are lost”.
Internal events, not external phenomena, proliferate more and more among human beings. Lately, a growing desire for a direct experience of God has been observed in all five continents, since Christlike experiences do not depend on third parties, on theologies and rituals, but on a personal and direct experience of the inner Christ. If this yearning is intensified and generalized, it can be the prelude to a new Pentecost, a radical transition from the Adamic ego to the divine Self.
The second coming of Christ does not depend on the objective world external to man but the subjective world within him. For many truly spiritual men and women, the arrival of this glorious advent of Christ has already taken place. An advent that does not happen properly; instead, will be created by man himself. The new mystical consciousness and the new ethical experience are the only ones responsible for this advent of Christ in spirit and truth.
