Numerous books address the life of the historical Jesus, claiming that he spent his youth, between the ages of 12 and 30, in foreign countries, citing Egypt, India, Tibet.
However, first-century historical sources ignore the absence of Jesus, and they do not even mention his presence among the Essenes, where he probably spent some time with John the Baptist.
His countrymen were surprised when the young carpenter, at the age of thirty, appeared in public as a prophet, for, according to them, Jesus had not attended any school. The people of Nazareth knew him as the son of the carpenter Joseph, who worked in the workshop every day. If Jesus had been absent for 18 years, his countrymen would have claimed his absence in far-off countries to explain the mystery of his great wisdom, but no word of his absence is said in the gospels.
Furthermore, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Paul of Tarsus know nothing of his absence. Not even Paul, a travelled and learned man; nor Luke, the Greek physician, who says in the preface to his Gospel that he carefully investigated, from its origin, all the facts concerning the life of Jesus – no one mentions a supposed absence. The narration of the annunciation, which only Luke mentions, suggests that he was personally with Mary, mother of Jesus, who was still living in Jerusalem between the years 58 and 60. Consequently, wouldn't Luke, the meticulous historian, have heard of Jesus' absence?
If Jesus had spent long years in Egypt, India, Tibet – classic countries of esoteric initiation – wouldn't he, during his public life, have initiated his disciples, according to the custom of those countries? But none of the evangelists ever mention that Jesus initiated even one of them, not even Peter, James or John, his favourite disciples. Jesus gave guidance showing how they could initiate themselves into the mysteries of the Kingdom of God, but he did not initiate them. Until the end of Jesus' life, the disciples remained as profane as before! And here are some examples: some ask permission to call fire from heaven to kill the Samaritans, who denied them lodging; others, ambitious, want to sit one on the right and one on the left of Jesus, in the kingdom of his glory. All understood by the Kingdom of God, the restoration of Israel's independence, and even on the last day of his life, at the Ascension, they ask: “Is this now that you are going to restore Israel’s kingdom”?
Consequently, no trace of spiritual initiation!
It is true that, on the glorious morning of Pentecost, 120 people, men and women, were initiated into the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. It was a self-initiation, not an initiation by external factors; after nine days of silence and meditation, the divine light was lit in them. And that day – probably May 30th of the year 33 – was the birth of true Christianity on Earth.
Therefore, in the face of this total silence, it cannot be admitted as probable that Jesus was in Egypt, India, Tibet, or any other far-off country, neither as a master nor even as a disciple.
And yet, Jesus was the greatest of the initiates, going through self-initiation in those 18 years of relative solitude in the Galilee mountains and being initiated in the Kingdom of Heaven. His self-initiation journeys did not demand distant countries, but the Universe itself, the “many dwellings in the house of the Heavenly Father”.
Already at age 12, after three days of silence and interiorization, in some corner of Jerusalem, Jesus reveals a pearl of wisdom so surprising that he filled the spiritual leaders of Israel with stupefaction.
After this initial awakening, he continued his spiritual journey for another 18 years, until it culminated, at the age of 30, when he began to speak to the people about the mysteries of the Kingdom of God, which he had lived intensely during those years.
Luke, the conscientious historian, closes these 18 years of self-initiation with a single sentence, saying: “And Jesus grew in grace and wisdom, before God and men.”
How could historians know of these esoteric mysteries, if no one accompanied the teenager Jesus in his vast experiences through the unknown realms of the Father, where these cosmic journeys were not necessarily carried out through the regions of the Cosmos, but through his inner cosmos, as he said, since “the Kingdom of God is within you”.
For this reason, the evangelists do well to silence the period between 12 and 30 years of Jesus' life.
